Joint Statement from Marie Collins, Ken Reilly, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin
and Phil Garland (Director of the Diocesan Child Protection Service) following a meeting at Archbishop’s House on Wednesday, 14th July 2004
A meeting took place today following an invitation from Archbishop Martin as a follow-up to the meeting between Marie Collins, Ken Reilly, Cardinal Desmond Connell and Bishop Eamonn Walsh on 30 December 2002, and subsequent to an informal meeting with Archbishop Martin.
Issues discussed included the five points from the meeting of December 2002:
1. On-going care of all who have been hurt by the issue of clerical child sexual abuse.
2. Development of existing and future training of all involved in the work of the Church in this area.
3. Guidelines on child protection within the Church.
4. Co-operation with civil authorities.
5. Communications based on fact and truth while recognizing the sensitivities of the issues involved.
All parties are happy that good progress has been made in a number of areas in relation to all five points.
Marie Collins and Ken Reilly welcomed the openness of Archbishop Martin in relation to the issues discussed.
In addition, they welcome the introduction of the Child Protection Service under Cardinal Connell and its continued support under Archbishop Martin.
The Archbishop thanked Ken Reilly and Marie Collins for the on-going direct involvement they have now in relation to the development of the Child Protection Service and the greater understanding of all Church personnel in relation to these matters.
